There is only a trickle of water coming from the cold water in our bath. The cold tap in the basin in the bathroom runs perfectly. Any advice or suggestions please

I've had this with my taps occasionally. Now, I rent so I phone up the landlord & get someone round to fix it, so I don't really know what to do, but I think it might be the washer needs replacing? I know we needed the whole taps replacing at old house but both the hot & cold taps in the kitchen did this once every other month... Private landlords sometimes send round workmen who know how to do a very cheap short term fix :(
  • Tap head gear is faulty. You can replace it with a tap reviver kit. No plumbing skills required. Turn water off first. Instructions.

The tap reviver kits work well and normally include a range of adaptors to fit most taps.

Alternatively, some of the larger B&Q stores sell the cartridges on their own for slightly less but these don't come with adaptors and you have to re-use the handles. I paid ~£6 for 2 cartridges for basin taps (1/2").

Could be the cold water storage tank in the loft is empty. The cold supply to the bath should be plumbed in separately to other cold outlets if done correctly.

Sometimes all the cold outlets in the bathroom are piped from the cold storage tank.

Check the ball valve in the loft has not stuck shut. (very common)

The exact same thing happened to me the other week.

It was a simple fix that just meant taking the top of the tap off. The tap washer was fitted to a captive nut that was in turn connected to a threaded spindle. Turning the tap would turn the thread which would raise or lower the nut and washer. Somehow the thread had gradually come undone so I just needed to screw it back into the nut.

I've managed to make it sound much more complicated than it really was, it took about 10 minutes once I'd figured out what had happened.

Maybe your tap is the same....probably worth a go.

Many thanks for all those really useful replies. If I can get the very stubborn tap on tank to move to turn water off, then I can get going. Thanks
