Which varnish to use over acrylic paint?

I have painted my wooden back door step in water based eggshell and would like to protect it further from the elements etc. but I'm not sure if it's okay to cover it in an oil based varnish (e.g. yacht varnish). Will the two types of cover be compatable or should I stick with water based?

If its a outside step I personnel would have used oil based paint on wood. I wouldn't use any varnish on top of any paint acrylic or oil based0

Thanks Bloss0m. The paint is Dulux outdoor satinwood and I just wanted to be add yacht varnish to protect it further. I'll just have to paint another coat of the satinwood instead (and next time consider an oil based paint, specifically for doorsteps).0
