I wonder what the rules where in taking a sgian dubn with me overseas as part of my kilt outfit?
The guy i purchased my outfit said you cant take these with me overseas why cause its a blade, what would happen if i did take one with me,would they search or ask for me to remove from my case or could or would i have problems when i got to greece.
Or is there no issues in taking these with you,i have seen fake ones available to buy,but my mother today purchased ones that have the blade which yes is ok to have in scotland i suppose and in uk as part of the scottish outfit, but the ones she got today has the blade glued in do you think that be ok or is it the fact its still a knife and they just dont allow it,i need to know as would not want the hassle or to have it taken from me or get into some sort of bother i wonder if anyone has taken these with them and what happened.

Why would you take the chance?0

DO NOT RISK IT. I have heard lots of stories on this. Most end up with either confiscation of knife or non-flying. OR arrest in foreign climes by police who don't care about your good excuses.
Take it back to the shop and exchange for "safety" type, or use araldite to glue it into sheath and carry in hold baggage, not hand baggage.0 -

For those MSErs wondering what a sgian dubn is it's a small, ceremonial knife traditionally housed in a Scotsman's sock and is intended to be whipped out and used in a threatening manner when that Scotsman is told it's his turn to buy a round.
It can also be used in an emergency to prise open his wallet.
People from Yorkshire also covet knives like these but are usually too mean to purchase one.0 -
Phone your airline and find out their rules, at the very best they'll want it put in the hold, understandable given the fact they are razor sharp but i get the feeling they'll tell you not to bring it onboard. I'm with you on the plastic ones though, being a proud Scotsman it boils my blood those things, i can't bring myself to use them whenever i wear a kilt!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

Also, even glued into the sheath, surely it would show as a knife on the xray? What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

Why would you want to take a knife anywhere with you, let alone Greece?0

Mrs G usually takes a large kitchen knife on holiday with her. Very useful if you are self catering. She packs it into the hold luggage and it has never been an issue. Her sister regularly packs firearms into her hold luggage and had never had a problem either.
Mind you, neither of them walk around with them stuffed in their socks when they get to their destination.0 -

This is why the fake ones have become popular - it is nothing to do with security - just that they CANNOT be used as you mention................:rotfl::rotfl:0 -
