I'm not sure you quite understood my original post ?

I wasnt asking why my premiums went up after accidents.

I was asking how I can be sure that my premiums would not have gone up by a similar amount even if I hadn't be buying NCP for the last few years.

    maybe unanswerable question !

    P

The protected NCD just makes sure that your premium comes down by 65% (think that's right for full NCD), so yes the premium would still rise regardless of the protection.
    Premium = £1000 with 65% discount = £350
if 3 accidents send your premium to £3000 then your discount brings it down to £1950, so your NCP is protecting your 65% discount on the premium.

If you want to know the answer to your question, try doing a quote with 1 year NCB, 2 years, etc and see what the difference is in your quotes.
    .

i tried that last week with mine. With 0 NCD Admiral came back at £744 but with 9 years NCD the quote was over £600

Your NCB is transferable between companies, but your protection of that NCB is a matter between just yourself and your current insurance company.

Could you imagine one insurance company saying "this other insurance company took money to protect a bonus and now expects us to give insurance on that NCB - oh, that's ok then".

Any insurance company, when giving any quote, asks for details of claims you have made and give their quote accordingly. Someone with no claims will get a better quote than someone with three claims, whether the later had protected bonus or not.

Yes agree, is self-evident that NCB protection is only extant for the period of cover by a particular company. But noone on this topic has suggested otherwise ?

Are you being dense for effect?

Was it 3 claims in one period of cover?

Sorry, I'm just trying to be precise because the devil often lies in the detail !

I think my IQ is probably OK but I am very ignorant of car insurance stuff, that's why I'm posting, please don't shoot me down !

To answer your question, yes was in one period of cover.

    that's a surprisingly small difference !

and kind of related to the point of my OP - is NCB a bit over-hyped by the insurance companies to get us to pay for expensive NCB protection ?

Then i suggest you dont go around making accusations of 'scams' when its down to your lack of knowledge of how things work

    What ?!!!!!!

'and how do I know the companies arent scamming me' was my original quote.

-isn't quite the same as 'going around making accusations of scams' that you suggest !!

secondly, I sure lack knowledge on many subjects, as I suppose we all do, but on precisely what point are you referring to ?

Well how would you know if you were being scamed or not?

After 30 years of driving I find it shocking you know so little about car insurance.

    To Woody and pgilc1

I find your personal attacks a bit OTT ! i note the forum organizers has plonked a banner by my name saying please be especially nice to newbies - I dont feel that is what you are doing !

When you suggest I might be 'dense' or lacking in knowledge or know shockingly little, do you really think these things without knowing anything about my intelligence or educational background ? or are you just being cheeky ?! Perhaps we should all declare our A level grades/university degrees/careers so that we can compare from an objective standpoint.... I think that might be quite interesting !

but forum etiquette aside, i totally agree with robust strong debate, that is the fun !

however I am still confused as to which point you think i am ignorant on. please specify. otherwise I will assume you have not read my original post carefully enough.:)
