Looks like a widespread scam, see messages on this forum and this one (Bingham Trading Inc).

Just received this from Barclaycard can any one tell me what it means only use this card for shopping online

    Thank you for contacting us

It may help you to know that transactions from the above merchant have appeared on your account as a result of accessing an internet website or service provider. The nature of this access has authorised the merchant to charge your account on a ongoing basis .
As Barclaycard is unable to cancel the authority or obtain refunds on your behalf you should telephone the merchant direct.

Sent me a form to fill in also but have not cancled my card

I woud cancel the card pronto - just say you think you lost it - before you get another charge.

    Then argue over the transaction...

I've got some bad news for you. What they are saying is that you have set up a "Continuous Payment Authority". These are nasty things in the wrong hands. Even canceling your card does not stop them being able to take money off it and you being liable to pay for it. Barclaycard are right in saying they can't stop it.

First you should read up on it so you know what you are up against. Here is an article (which Martin contributed to) about it. There is also a Sticky thread discussing it here

Quite what you can do about it is less clear. Contacting the company involved and asking them to cancel the CPA is the standard answer, but no good if they won't play fair. You could try disputing with Barlcaycard that you ever authorised a CPA with this company. That might be tricky though as the names of the companies doing the debits often don't match the retailer so Barlaycard might think you just don't realise that you did set it up. Otherwise just insist that Barclaycard investigate. As it says in the article it can take 6 months work so they will be reluctant at first.

Unlike a one-off credit card purchase there is very little protection for a CPA. Only ever set them up with companies you trust. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

If you cancel your card, are you not issued with a new card number that they will be unaware of, so they can't charge you again?
  • Geeeezuuuzzzzz!!

The link in 'SamC' post to 'Fool' is  .

My impression is that these 'scammers' MUST be generating Credit Card numbers and just hitting the Credit Card companies with a batch at a time, in the hope that some will get through. I don't believe that they are obtaining 'real' Credit Cards numbers by other 'means'.

If I'm right, what are the Card companies doing about it ...... nowt I expect, it's our problem!!!!
It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........
and it'll only take about another 100 years for mankind to really **** it up!!!!

I recall a news item a couple of years ago saying there are websites that can automatically generate random valid credit card numbers

  • ..... and a quick search in Google lists lots of software availability as well.
