Switch to Santander from smile

I wanted to make use of the Santander interest free overdraft offer and have a smile account with a couple of direct debits I could transfer. Smile received the request from Santander for the list of payments and seem to have completely over reacted and canceled my overdraft and closed the account. Have they just made a mistake or is this all part of their "responsible lending"policy (they want to stop me ending up with two overdrafts?) It just seems a bit strange. I was planning on paying off smile overdraft partly using the santander one, and in my own time, but I'm now in a situation with rejected direct debits by smile because of this. Anyone had similar issues with smile?

I transferred from Smile to Halifax and that didn't happen, my account was (and still is) left open... with an overdraft. That was 18 months ago. Smile (Co-Op) rank highly for customer service but Santander is rated very low. Perhaps Santander made a "mistake" and told Smile that you wanted to close your account when the transfer is completed?I get enough exercise just pushing my luck0

I've been told I need to speak to "account management". Have they realised that it's not my main account and that I've just been abusing their free overdraft..?0
