The landlord should be held responsible for the proportonal cost of a chicken. He can pay up next time he's coming round to change the lightbulb.
Lightbulb? You mean tenants expect lightbulbs nowadays!? My god, they'll be some kind of method for making hot water next!

Take photo. Print photo. Send photo to landlord with letter saying you weren't happy about it being left like this.

Cook and eat the frozen food.

Defrost freezer. Put towels on floor to mop up water. Turn off at wall. Take the big chunks of ice out when they are freely movable.

Some people use a hairdryer to defrost fridges but I suspect you should do yours by the "letting it melt" method.

I'll check that with my landlord - he's just making my bed at the moment.

Don't chip at it! That's a surefire way to damage it. Just place a bowl of hot water under the ice box to help the defrosting along.

Now where's that recipe book? Coronation chicken anyone?

The chicken will only have been dangerous if it had been thawed and then re-frozen before eating. Possibly not an issue that will concern the landlord. He probably would have been more annoyed if the previous tenant unplugged the fridge/freezer and left it to defrost all over the floor.

By all means speak to the landlord (though, as it isn't a life-threatening emergency, you may find that he doesn't use his weekend to get back to you) and see what he says, but try and keep things light - it's NOT a good idea to fall out with him over a relatively trivial thing like this.

I'd hesitate to buy a whole new freezer/fridge until the defrosting's been completed and you know how much space is in there once it's ice-free. If you DO really need one, you could try your local Freecycle or local paper sales/wants for a decent second-hand one.

Good luck in your new home. x

My landlord actually came round and prepared a nice chicken curry when I had a similar incident.

I think it's shocking if they are not all up to this standard, there should be some kind of law.
