Which EON tariff?

We are currently on the Save Online 4 tariff which comes to an end at the beginning of November. We are going to stay with EON at present but my brain is spinning as to which of their tariffs it would be prudent to move to.

We only moved into this property at the beginning of Feb and took over the bills at the beginning of January. Initial usage will be totally inaccurate as we had the builders in for the first couple of months and had the boiler replaced, electric heaters on drying out the new plaster, draughts where windows were being replaced etc so I have nothing to give me an idea of annual usage which I think is what is causing the confusion.

Which tariff seems to be the best value given their latest price hikes?

I hope someone answers this - I was only looking at my EON account earlier and trying to decide which one to change to!

Well only you can answer that.

However the tools you need to make a descision are (1) a knowledge of your tariff name (2) your typical annual consumption(s) in kWhrs

These can either be obtained from your bill and/or your current supplier. It is useful also to be aware whether the tariff *may* be subject to early termination fees (or to put that differently the maturity date, if any).

Next go to a Consumer Focus accredited comparison website and enter the said data above. Digest the results.

That's it. Well that's the simplified approach which is fine for starters. Give it a try and report back if you like.

I'm currently on their Saveonline 6. The EON Press Release indicates dual fuel customers will see an increase of 15.2% wef 13th Sept. As they've just updated the website with the new figures today - my calculation is that my tariff increases by a net 22% (which is close to 50% extra!).

You could look at their fix to 2013. But I checked that a few weeks ago, just after Scottish Power kicked the snowball off again, and it implied an increase for me of 24%. And they amended the figures shortly afterwards - which pushed the increase to 26%. Working from a base of Saveonline 4 ...... I would expect the hike for you to be steeper?

There is a Saveonline 9 (not clear how recent it is) which implies a just over 8% increase for me. But - all their other variable tariffs show clearly they are the 13th Sept new prices - this one does not. So they have an Email from me indicating my intention to move (and which then gets me out of the tie in fee) - unless they can clarify the Saveonline 9 is showing the new tariff (a Moneysupermarket comparison shows it does reflect the increase), in which case I will likely opt in to it. As only the EDF fix for a year comes in cheaper - and that at the margins.

If you want to stay with EON I would imagine the Saveonline 9 is your cheapest option - unless the tariff for your area is wildly different to Yorkshire. If you manage your account online - Login and then click on the 'Switch Now' at the bottom right of the next page. It will show your current tariff at the top and other tariffs you can switch to below it. Even without a full year's Kwh history .... a calculator will fairly quickly show you which tariff is likely to be the least damaging?

Im on SaveOnline 8 - SaveOnline 9 at the 'introductory' price is £250 cheaper than v8 after the Sept increase according to the comparison sites.

Cant see v9 on the list of tariffs I can switch to using my online account. Assume it is available to existing customers though I wouldnt want to switch until the increase is effective on 13-Sep because the existing v8 is marginally cheaper than v9...

And for how long will prices for v9 be cheaper? Perhaps just a marketing ploy to put v9 as the 'best buy' on the comparison sites to encourage new customers from other suppliers and then increase the price some time later...;)

When you say the September increase does that include the 18% that they have also added to people who used to save 20% for doing their account online?

Bumping in the hope the EON rep Helena can answer some of our questions ... Especially about online 9 which says prices are from 7th Sept so wondering if they go up on 13th Sept as well. Also whether I have to pay the £30 fee if I am staying with Eon but changing tariff ...

    Hi redfrock,

Sorry for the late reply, Malc and I are trying to answer as much as poss, just got a bit of catching up to do :o

The SaveOnline 9 already includes the increase, so this won't go up again in September. Just to be aware that it is not a fixed or capped tariff so there is no guarantee that this will not go up in the future (in response to BMikey).

The £30 cancellation fee may be applied if you change tariff/supplier before the end date of a tariff, as stated in the T&C's (if this is applicable) but just changing tariff within E.ON means you would normally be ok.

As Mikeyorks has said, you can use the 'switch now' link at the bottom of the 'your account' page and this will show you tariff's you can switch to.

You can also ask us for any extra info.

    Thanks

    Helena :)
