Is the extra 50p because they English Tomatoes?

Firstly apologies for the poor grammar in the title! Was obviously so annoyed I missed the "are" in Is the extra 50p because they "are" English Tomatoes?

Just wanted to have a bit of a moan. I know prices have been going up in supermarkets by ridiculous amounts but I was particularly annoyed today in Tescos.

I usually buy the little Piccollo tomatoes. My two boys love eating them for snacks and my eldest takes at least 6 or 7 in his lunch box to his summer camp. I have been paying £1.25 for a flat tray of them, bought one on Thursday. They have generally been coming from Italy or Spain. Well I went in today and the price had increased to £1.75, a price rise of 50p, 40%:eek::mad: To top it all they were now from Kent! Is the price rise just because they are now English?

Well there was no way I could justify the extra 50p a pack with the amount my two get through it would be about an extra £2-£3 per week just on tomatoes! So I bought some cherry tomatoes from Italy for £1 instead!

It's weird how we are told to shop local to save air miles etc yet it normaly makes it more expensive! I have rather alot of guinea pigs so price comes before where the produce comes from and I reckon most of it is from abroad! I do try and support the local grocers when I can.

The's a farm near me that does pick your own,a couple years ago I was chatting to the owner.He'd just filled a large order for Strawberries for MrT's...at the eleventh hour,they'd cancelled the order & he was stuck with the order. (he got them shifted tho to local stores) & he was telling me,his Strab's went from Ballywalter (N.I) over to England to be packed ect,then back to N.I.....Madness or what!

That's why supermarket produce never lasts long as it is shipped all over the place to be packed before it actually hits the shop floor.

I always buy English, if there are no English produce on the shelves I will not buy. I was in Tesco a while back, it was the height of the strawberry season and there on the shelves were strawberrys from the USA....... Madness totaL madness!!!

I'd pay an extra couple of quid a week to ensure that the money goes to British suppliers.

Tesco will be charging extra because they think customers will pay it. The weather's nice and they think people will want salady stuff. If prices were more expensive in the UK, they just don't buy here. they have no loyalty to British suppliers, just themselves and their share-holders.

Just what happened to IoW tomatoes when we lived there. Picked, sent to Portsmouth to the main market, bought by IoW distributor, shipped back to the Island !!!

I remember a reading about Tesco local milk coming from a farm in the area and transported on a 300 mile trip to the bottling plant and then returned to the shelf as local. Completely within labelling laws but you don't always get what you think with them.
And a quote from Tesco "There is no legal definition of local -and local means different things to different people." This was after being asked why produce from 150 miles from the store was classed as local.

Back to the point, It gets me every time that even when in season most things in England are more expensive than imported foreign produce. I buy wholesale and at the moment 6kg of tomatoes costs me £6 for Spanish or £11 for local, go figure.
