                    Hiya
I don't know if this is in the right place, but I wanted to share this.
We recently moved house, county too, and I have been dealing with getting our council tax overpayment refunded. Not a major deal (you pay over 10 months and the next two are 'off' monhts).
However, what I have just realised is that we had three separate council tax bills with the council. A from when we were together, B from when it was just me, and then C, our latest one.
What really gets me is that there were credit balances (obviously) on accounts A and B from 18 months ago, and they have been quite happy just sitting on my money. It is only that I mistakenly gave an older account number to the person I was enquiring to about my refund that I picked this up.
Anyway £160 of mine is now back on its way to its rightful owner - ME - 18 months later !!!!

If its like our dept -we send bills out when the acct is closed and if the person doesn't reply we cant spend time searching and chasing up customers - it costs too much.
The trick is that if you even suspect a credit due, ring up or write in and ask.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

But you can spend time searcing and chasing people who owe you, sometimes for really small amounts that probably cost more to recover than there value.CIS wrote:If its like our dept -we send bills out when the acct is closed and if the person doesn't reply we cant spend time searching and chasing up customers - it costs too much.

People in council tax offices are little more than parking attendants in a different guise.,0

Wouldn't have been difficult to find me. I was still living in the same house.0

I wouldn't call £50+ small amounts - anything less than that and its quite often written off.
Would you expect your gas or electric company to let you off with not paying £10 or £20 here or their ?I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals.
