Don't know the set up of the BMW, but some cars have the battery in the boot area.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

My (ex) Volvo S60 had the battery in the boot. Probably with Volvo to improve safety - last thing you want in a bad front smash is possibly warm acid in your face too. May also be to do with trying to spread weight distribution a bit.

Aye, Battery in the boot - it's a safety thing - but also weight distribution.

Most modern cars though with electronics have booster points - should not boost it directly from the battery terminals, could fry the electronics.

Quite a few cars have the battery in the boot. Many BMWs, including some 3-Series and all 1-Series.

Some Porsches are a bit odd - left hand drive versions of some models have the battery under the bonnet, yet right hand drive versions of the same model don't!

It isn't uncommon at all. My car has the battery in the boot. It also has jump start posts under the bonnet. I think it has more to do with finding room rather than any safety concerns.
