Decorating or Central Heating first.

I'm currently planning to do up my house. I'm planning on getting Central heating fitted, but also the whole of the inside needs painting.

What should I do first as people are telling me both things?

If I paint first then I have access to everthing all the walls will be clear as there will be no radiators, but when the central heating gets fitted I expect they will need to drill holes and things and make a mess, in which case would it be better to decorate afterwards?

Decorating is known as one of the 'finishing trades' and for good reason. If you decorate first, the CH fitters will make a right mess of your walls.

You need to get the CH done first, but ask them not to commission the system. Tis means the rads can be left off, then decorate and then get them back to hang the rads and commission the system.

Hi: discuss your requirements with your RGI. My OH will fit rads then remove for decorating but at additional cost: he will want payment in full for the boiler installation as removing rads is quoted as a separate item agreed with the customer. The boiler can be commissioned, notified to BC via GSR and warranty registered with the manufacturer. A recent customer took 6 months to finish his decorating and the rads needed another flush.

    Btw...my RGI is housetrained.;)

As others said CH first the decorate.
  • I agree with staffie1, you should do your central heating first, then do the decorating.

As above. You will have pipes being installed, under floorboard, or in walls, or in screed floors, which will create mess.

If not confident enough to remove and replace rad then sure get the installer back and forth but it's all going to cost extra.

There are plenty of online guides explaining how to shut off, drain and remove a radiator. It's easy enough to do.

Does everyone take their radiators off when they decorate then? I've never bothered, just paint or paper as far as I can down the back, underneath and side.

After my late mother died, we had to decide whether to remove furniture before people started viewing. We chose to remove it first, and then when the auction house van arrived, we discovered that the area behind each item was unpainted. Removal of a radiator is not hard, but it might realistically take two people if the unit is a bit heavy. And care needs to be taken not to spread dirty water everywhere (use an old towel/curtain).

Please get your CH done first - it is a nightmare to work in a newly decorated house. Just been doing some comms cabling in a newly decorated house, and they wanted the cables totally hidden, to say it was tricy is an understatement, CH would be even worse.
