Keyboard not working

The keyboard on my home computer is not working.
I spent last night checking that the keyboard cable is securely connected to the port on the PC which it is.
And and CAPS/NUM lock lights come on when I press the respective keys.
But when I type in any program there is no response.
The mouse is fine - just the keyboard which is not working.
Any ideas what is going on?
It is a Dell Dimension 3000 machine.
I don't have access to another keyboard to test if it will work.

In Device Manager DELETE the keyboard. Reboot the PC.
It will find the keyboard and load the drivers.
Check the configuration (52 key etc) and language are correct by going into Control Panel, Keyboard and Regional Options.0
