Laptop touchpad not working - any ideas?

Got a friends laptop here, it's an ebuyer extra value one, few years old. Only used for surfing, facebook etc. Running XP. Synaptics touchpad. Using a mouse right now but hopeing t get the touch pad back working.
For some reason the touchpad has stopped working. Buttons still work but not the touch pad itself. I've tried uninstalling and letting the pc detect it on startup, then installing latest drivers, no joy.
Also, in device manager, when you click on the touchpad properties there's no opeion to enable or disable, it's grayed out.
Any ideas what could be up/how to fix?
Thanks.

Is there a button near the power switch that enables/disables it?

Thanks, that was the first thing I tried, no luck.Sigless0 -
OK you tried the software approach. It's time to look at the bios. There can be a setting in the bios that disables the touchpad. You need to enter the bios and make sure the touchpad is enabled.0

Go to computer, Right click, Properties, device manger, if anything in there has an ! next to something click on it till you see the option update drivers. could be something in there.0

or, if the cable connecting it to the mobo has worked loose, re-seat it. Or, it could of course just be knackered and you need a new one

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Nothing showing in there. All devices have drivers, no yellow question marks.or, if the cable connecting it to the mobo has worked loose, re-seat it. Or, it could of course just be knackered and you need a new one
This seems likely, but sadly is outside of my ability to take it apart.
Thanks for the replies.Sigless0 -
Hi
Had similar problem with mine, which I have just sorted. Took me a while.
Click Control panel
Click Device manager
Scroll to Mice and point device and click on
Double click Synaptics Ps/2Touchpad
Click Driver
Click rollback driver once that has happened
Click update Driver.
Once update has happened you will be told to re-start computer.
Hope that helps you out.0
