I usually find that when you take into consideration cost of getting to and from the railway station the price ends up more on the train. Plus the inconvenience, in that you are tied to when the trains are running, and if you get back late at night, you may have to wait an hour or more before your homebound train arrives. The last thing you want to do when you get back from holiday, is hang arround. You just want to get home.

Actually, if I'm coming home on a long flight then the last thing I want to do it jump into my car and drive as I'm usually very tried/jetlagged and having to drive home means that I cannot take full advantage of the onboard "hospitality". I once drove after landing at Heathrow from the US and found myself driving around the M25 for over half an hour before I noticed that I was going the wrong way around.

If I'm going to be arriving back late then I will often get a parking and hotel deal so that I can get a good nights sleep before going home.

If you are flying on business, many companies (including my own) don't allow their people to drive after a long haul flight. For work I would always use a taxi as it usually works out cheaper than parking and claiming for mileage - plus I can have a snooze on the back seat.
