Santander - worst bank ever! Bank Charges advice...

Hi there,
Just a quick question about bank charges from Santander. I purchased an item on eBay using Paypal at the beginning of May, paid using my Santander account which is still linked up to paypal from my ebaying days. I deposited £100 cash and also withdrew £37.71 from the paypal account which gave me a balance of £137.71 plus I had £2.01 as a credit balance on that account which had been as such for about 2 years (i dont use this account at all due to being charged £135 when I was 16 and had no overdraft yet a cheque I paid out regularly for rent every month didnt clear and two cheques cleared in the next month putting me temporarily into 'unauthorised overdraft' for 5 days until my wages were paid in. Being young and worried, I followed the steps advised on this forum and wrote to the necessary bodies but it was long and drawn out so i just accepted the £25 fee refund, paid the rest and vowed never to use the account again.)
The item I purchased was £139.75 and the amount i had in the account was £139.72 which due to bad maths, I didnt recognise until the day after I pressed 'send payment' on paypal. I ran the next day to my college library to do an instant bank transfer using my main Halifax account which transfers funds within 2 hours. I deposited £1 to be on the safe side, then ran to the nearest Santander branch on my lunch break and printed a mini statement and even went to the desk to check that i had put the money in in time. Both said that I had a balance of £140.72 and that the payment had not been taken out yet. I left it knowing that paypal take 3-5 days before payment clears so thought nothing more of it and went back to not using the account.
Last weekend i unfortunately, through a fake job advert which sent me a false 'successful' job application forum which put a trojan onto my pc and stole my bank details, I ended up having to transfer my balance from my Halifax account to the Santander account to ensure that no more fraudulent activity took place. I did this online using the same 2 hr instant bank transfer on a friday. This monday, I went to my local santander atm and checked that the money had gone in. I was shocked to see that the balance i had transferred was there, minus £89.03.
To cut a long story short, I had apparently gone into overdraft by £0.03 for 3 days until the £1 went in. I didnt keep my ministatements stating that the £1 had gone in 3 days before that, and as far as Santander were concerned, i hadnt deposited it on the day i said that i had.
They had charged me £25 for the unauthorised overdraft arrangement fee or something like that, and then £20 interest for the period of owing £25.03 June 20th. I had received no letters regarding this otherwise I would have dealt with it when the fee was only £45. They then charged me £45 interest July 20th bringing the total to £90. I had been in credit of £0.97, therefore they had deducted £89.03 from my transfer from Halifax.
After multiple visits to the poorly staffed branch, 2 hour waits then being told machines were don and i would have to return the following day and phonecalls to the poorly trained customer service (who incorrectly calculated how much I would pay in total plus didnt even have my banking details correct, I had to tell them why i was charged) i finally went back on thursday and spoke to a customer advisor who proceeded to keep me in the room for over half an hour chatting me up and asking me about whether i would recommend that he moves to kent/out of london, he told me he couldnt refund all the charges because i had already been refunded £25 by the girl on the hone. But nevertheless, he refunded the £45 and also £100 that i was apparently due to be charged on the amount owing of £90 from july 21st to july 31st (£10 a day ?!?) so that left me with a total of £20 fees.

I thanked him and hotfooted it out of there, straight to the atm to check it had really been refunded. I accepted it and was grateful that i only had to pay £20 instead of £190! especially because of the fraud on my other account and having just lost my job. It wasnt until yesterday that my mum told me I should try and get the £20 refunded aswell as it is ridiculous to be charged that much for just 3p over 3 days.
My question is, should i just remove all my money from the account and be done and dusted with Santander or go on to claim for the £20?
thanks in advance!
p.s i apologise about the essay length, i just wanted you to be well informed!0 -
i too have had money taken from me.... I am owed over £60 in charges... I went to the bank and asked them to refund these charges but they point blank refused.... I hate the banks....0

What makes you believe you are owed £60 in charges?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Hi
Im having the same trouble at the moment, I went £9.36 overdrawn and they chrged me £190 in charges. I got them to clear it all because they give you a free unarranged overdraft of £10, which they DO NOT tell you about, this is to help you out if you over buy in a shop for instance. I am now having trouble again because after the cashier refund my account of the charges she siad she would put note on my account, the cashier forgot to put notes on to clear the next months charge. My bank is now £300 overdrawn!!! I have been advised to right a letter of complaint to the bank and I have also been considering talking to consumer affairs.
I would right a letter and tell them you want your charges back.BeckyMAC:beer:0 -
Just to give you a glimmer of hope.
I printed off my transactions online for the last 8 months and highlighted all charges and sent off to my local branches complainants department, just Monday past. Total charges plus interest was £510 and they refunded £210 the very next day into my account without question.
Now, I think that my current financial hardship letter and asking them to refund it as a goodwill gesture went along way to getting it.
I recently have done the same with Halifax, using the same basic template claiming £1990 in charges and interest and got £580.
I think it strongly depends on what you actually write about your plight and how bad off they view your situation.regards

Hi all
This is my first time posting on this thread.
I have had numerous charges over the past few years, I have a student account which was at its limit of £3000 (yeah I know!) However, when I asked for my limit to remain the same after it was reviewed I was declined due to the amount of charges I'd received, therefore it was reduced down to £1200.. Now, clearly I was in no position to pay back £1800 straight away and basically they said there's nothing they can do!
I have wrote an email and letter to the CEO on monday explaining all of this, saying the charges have basically hammered me the past couple of years (some for like spending £4 and then gettin charged £28-35 for it! I also said that I was worried about being in more debt and it affecting my credit score etc..I really do feel that I have been stung by the bank and I cannot possibly pay back the £1800 so I will now be getting charge unauthorised over draft fees each day, so it will culminate into more and more debt each day!
I haven't heard anything !! And I have previously read that others heard something straightaway..
Does anyone have any advice, what should I do? Should I still go down the route of sending initial letters etc? I just feel like its going to keep snowballing, and that's why I wrote to the CEO,
Does any1 know of anyone else I can contact?
Many thanks everyone

hi
i also emailed the CEO of santander, a few weeks back. (21st July).
after being passed via email to 3 different people, they eventually gave me £70 back as good will! - i had asked for £450!
anyway i got the final response letter from them, so i filled in the FOS form and sent it off, this was 2 weeks ago.
out of the blue this monring i got a email from santander again, RE my oringinal email sent 21st July, saying they had tried to call me again but could not get hold of me, and that they would be sending a letter in the post - interesting i thought!
i have just checked my online back account to see they have paid another £390 into my account!!!!! thats £460 in total!
i have no idea if this is to do with the FOS letter i sent off, or just someone else at santander looking into it, anywas im very happy!0 -

Was it specified that your overdraft can be called in at any time? If so the bank would be well within their rights to reduce the amount they are willing to offer you especially if it is not possible to keep within any higher limit.0
