I received a letter this morning from midascreditservcies stating that I owe Santander £371.08. So I phoned them as I had no idea what they were refering too. It turns out that I owe this morning for an alliance and leicester current account held by myself and partner and then closed down over a year ago (if not longer). So my partner phoned Santander to discuss the account. Unfortunately I no longer had any statements from the accounts or account details however he somehow managed to discuss the account. He spent two hours on the phone to at least 5 different people, one of whom (Dan from collections) told him to hold while he discussed the account with his supervisor, then my partner was transfered to somebody who knew nothing of the previous phone conversation. He asked to be reconnected to Dan from collections but was told he couldn't be, he was reconnected to connections where he was then informed that Dan from collections had put him through to customer services because he couldn't help him any further, not what he told my partner!
Anyway he eventually found out that the debt was due to a returned standing order which created a charge which them multiplied. As the account is closed they say they cannot do anything about these charges and that he would have to speak to the complaints departments and explain the whole situation again.
So they put him through to complaints and he failed security because he did not know the date the account was opened, despite having all the account details (because these had been given him by the other people he had spoken too). He then was told that somebody will phone him back within four hours that was two hours ago and so far no call. The other issue is that they said they had sent us 11 letters requesting payment, I have not received one of these and they did not attempt to phone us.
I am appalled by their service and really can't afford to the pay the money back and this will have affected both our credit ratings.

Write an official letter of complaint to Santander (recorded delivery). They have 8 weeks in which to attempt to resolve the issue. If you feel the issue hasn't been resolved satisfactorily after the 8 weeks (Santander should by then have issued you with a final decision letter), then make a complaint the the FOS. HERE'S the FOS website.
