Help - Cillit Bang has destroyed my hob!

Oh dear

My stainless steel hob was mucky from cooking last night's dinner, so I sprayed some Cillit Bang on it... and wandered off and forgot all about it.

Two hours later, I wiped it off and the stainless steel is really discoloured with blueish/black patches. I presume it's some sort of chemical reaction.

Has this happened to anyone and did you manage to shift it? We are renting this house and I really don't want to lose our deposit when we go :(

    Oh dear. :(

I don't personally use Cillit Bang because I've heard so many stories about it ruining surfaces but there is an older thread about ruined hobs, there may be some ideas that work there:

Thanks - there's one suggestion there for a product from Lakeland that might work. But it's given me the idea that silver polish might remove it as it looks like tarnish, so I'll try that first.

Using Autochrome might be worth a go. It's a thick cream polish but is quite gentle and will remove most tarnish marks from steel...good luck.
  • i done exactly the same thing,i tried everything then i used ciff(jiff)i left it overnight then cleaned,it got it looking back to normal.you can try this, hopefully it should work good luck.

Hi- I know this an old thread but it seems people are still making the same mistakes! I used ciliate bang on my hob and alas it's tarnished- which cif product did u use? Would it be okay on metallic hob?
  • It is actually banned for use in the cleaning industry.
You could try a paste of bicarbonate of soda to neutralise it and stop any more damage , rinse well and try using a metal polish not brasso, you need the liquid.
I don't know if this will work but it is worth a try

I have used baby oil after cleaning my cooker and it makes it shine, you could give that a go.

Cillit Bang is toxic waste that hasn't been disposed of yet. However, there are extreme cleaning jobs where you do need to use the heavy artillery and chemical shells.
