wireless enabled

hope someone can help me with this!

If a laptop is 'wireless enabled' does this mean that you should be able to connect to a wireless network without any other equipment or do you still need a wireless network card thingie?

I have been trying to get my MIL's laptop on our network so i can download AVG for her, it would take ages to download with the dial up connection she has at home. I assumed that wireless enabled meant it was ready to go but I had no joy trying to find our connection with it Its an Advent 7110... does anyone have one and could tell me if their is a physical switch you need to press to get connected or if their is somewhere on the pc to enable the function? I hope someone can help, this laptop is proving to be a difficult nut to crack! My MIL cant even get it on to her dial up connection at home! She is with BT Yahoo and has the disc but it just wont load.. it takes her to a page where it says that BT are having a technical problem and maybe she would like to phone the 50p a min line to speak to someone who wont have a clue what she is on about! :eek:

You don't mention if you have a wireless broadband router already installed. Assuming you do, there is normally a switch on notebooks to turn the wireless card on and off, try searching for that.
If you right-click on My Computer (on your desktop) and go to "properties" and then "Hardware" and then "Device Manager" in the category "Network adapters" do you see anything with the word "Wireless" in it - if so, then it your wireless card has been detected by Windows. If not, are there any yellow exclamation marks on any devices?

If your wireless card is detected and switched on, normally Windows will find networks within range, that you can connect to - try the Wireless Network Connection Wizard in Control Panel.

Never seen an Avent 7110. Is there a wireless icon down by the clock in the system tray. If there is, can you click on it and see any options? Is your wireless network encrypted?
