TfL Congestion Charges - What A Mess!

Hi everybody, hope you are all well.
I know this is probably going to be the most laughable story ever to have graced this forum.
Basically I drive a 59 plate Toyota IQ2. Now, I read on the IQ forum that this car was exempt from the congestion charge. Not being a Londonder or very intelligent at times, I then proceeded to commute around London about 10 times in the congestion zone thinking it was exempt.
This all started in May time - I started receiving fines through the door, which I wrote a letter (albeit late) to say that my car was exempt from the congestion charge. TfL wrote back to say that it may be low carbon but the 59 plate does not qualify on air quality.
I wrote a letter back to say, I did not realise this, contesting the charges or coming to some sort of arrangement.
In the meantime, the fines are still coming through the door - I went on holiday for 2 weeks, I got myself all stressed about it and went into hibernation really - when the easiest thing would have been just to pay the £10 charge.
I wrote to a higher power to explain myself but have not heard back. This week I got a court order for £180, and today I got a letter from TfL to say the first two fines of £180 must be paid and that they will not accept my representation because it was late (I was out of the country!).
I am really confused and worried as I believe there will be about SIX of these at the MINIMUM which is a hell of a lot of money to pay out over something as ridiculous as me thinking my car was exempt from the congestion charge. I don't even pay ROAD TAX!
How on earth do I get myself out of this ridiculous pickle? Should I go to the solicitor to get the court paperwork signed so that I can appeal in the tribunal? I really cannot afford £1200 worth of fines just on the congestion charge.
I have been so daft

You need some advice on this go over to Pepipoo and ask there, if you don't pay by the dates given it will go to enforcement which will involve bailiffs and much more expense.
