EDF Energy has recently started to charge its customers a surcharge that they have to pay even if they don’t use the electricity at all. I wish to change to a tariff with no surcharge. Does anybody know a company that covers London that does not bill its customers a surcharge?

I immagine that by that you mean the standing charge. It's definitely not a new thing, pretty much all tariffs used to have standing charges on them, but there's now a move away from this towards ones that include it in your useage. As far as I'm aware, most (if not all) of the big six should offer a selection of non-standing charge prices that you can pay instead.
It does only tend to make a diference if the property is going to be empty for more than about 10 weeks in twelve though, as the extra cost is put onto the first few hundred kWh that you use each quarter (the ammount varies), know as Tier 1. If you use over that ammount then you've effectively paid the standing charge anyway.I am an employee of British Gas, however the views expressed on this post are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of Centrica, its subsidiaries or affiliated companies.0 -
A lot of the companies have a no standing charge option which means that you only pay for what you use. The way they charge you is different as you would go onto a `two tier tariff`.
Not paying a standing charge does not necessarily mean that you will save money.:money:0
