Fitting new brake blocks on bicycle - which way round?

Gap definitely at the back.

Get someone to gently apply the brake, jiggle / wiggle the pads about so they align with the rim
Elastic band around the brake lever and handlebar works well. Also helps when you are working on your bike.0 -

A good read
One observation, always set mine up with the gap at the rear, but when the pads are worn out, the fronts are worn the most. So I assume that although originally set up toeing in the pads wear most at the front and end up almost parallel.
