Post Redirection - way round this?

I suspect not but thought I'd ask anyway.

Been looking online at how to go about gettting your mail redirected. The charge is per surname, not per person. Fine thought I, we just need to pay for OH's surname which covers him and our daughter, and my surname which covers me and eldest son.

Then I realised that will be a problem as other son, who has the same surname as me is staying on in the family home so his post needs to stay at this address and not get redirected.

I take it there's no 'offical' way round this? Obviously I can just ask son to forward on my mail but I don't trust that he'll be all that conscientious about it tbh and there may be times when he has to work away.

Also, what happens in the case of joint letters? Our bank statements are sent out in Mr X & Ms Y, so would they get redirected if we only got OH's mail forwarded on?

We had to get our post redirected recently and it asked me for the people who were included in the redirection so if you don't put his name down his post should keep being delivered to the family home?

Can you leave some large envelopes in the house with the new address on, all stamped and remind him every week to send it?

Alternatively, redirect the lot and then post his back addressed to a pseudonym all in a separate envelope...
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I've been thinking about it and the previous tenants (who are also friends) got their mail redirected and they have different surnames too but managed to get it all in the one redirection so not sure if you would need 2 lots of redirection and therefore 2 charges?

    I'm just going by this......

The following prices apply to both redirections in the UK and addresses overseas.

Remember, the cost of redirecting private mail is calculated per surname, not per person, and for business mail it is calculated per trading name.

The price for EU overseas redirections includes VAT at the standard rate.

Length of Redirection Personal customers (per surname)

    12 month £40.85
    6 months £27.20
    3 months £17.62
    1 month £8.00

Don't put your son's name on the form. You need to fill in all first names and surnames that need redirecting. Then there is a box to tick if all family members at the old address are moving. Don't tick it.

There is also a box to tick if you want all variants of your name redirecting, ie aliasojo, alia, a, Ali etc.

I would hope that if both you & your partner pay for redirections of your names, joint mail would also come to you. But I'd call the helpline to check!

Edit- yes the charge is per surname, but that includes up to 8 people with the same surname.

don't put his name on the form and there'll be a note on the top of the form that the postie sees saying NOT WHOLE FAMILY REDIRECTION

this should in theory mean mail for him will not be redirected, however, the number of people who don't read the redirection card properly means it may not always be the case. If there is a problem, contact your old delivery office who is redirecting the mail, and inform them it's not being redirected correctly. IF you go via customer services and complain, there is a change they'll offer to extend your redirection for a further time free of charge, but obviously, only if mistakes are made.

Please note that it is worth remembering that if your son shares the same initial as someone else, and the mail is addressed simply to A Smith - which could be either Alison or Adrian - and there is an A Smith on the redirection instruction, the probability is the item would be redirected (it's a 50/50 chance for the postie really)

don't know if this helps of if I've explained correctly...

A Royal Mail redirection definitely applies to an individual, my step daughter has had her mail redirected and ours with the same surname continued to be delivered.

I recently moved and I get my mail directed for 3 months. I have also had my son and daughter's mail redirected too even though they were not on the form when I applied for redirection. If you get joint letters with both your names on it you should get them redirected as well because your name is still on them.

you just put down the fornames that are to be redirected
the redirection will state" not an entire family move"
