Hi everyone...
I had a new years party in my recently purchased house, and while the party was fantastic, the previously white carpets are not looking so good. In fact they look terrible. They are lovely quality carpets too, so would prefer not to replace them. They have got the full treatment -- red wine , beer, cigarrette ash. Any ideas how i can fix them up? steam cleaner, 'henry' hoover type thing? I would prefer to hire something, but just want to hear which one might work so i don't end up doing it several times!! And my parents are visiting next week, so would like to make the place presentable--I don't want them to think their son is quite the messy pig he used to be!!
Many thanks in advance

Blimey - I don't let people in the house with shoes on and I have a beige carpet - let alone have people slopping their drinks all over it
personally I would get the carpet professionally cleaned although that's not to say that all the stains will definitely come out
Next time you might want to think about covering it before having another party or alternatively go to their house for a party and spill your red wine and drop cigarettes on their carpet!0 -
Definitely opt for the professional clean.
Hope you can get one on short notice though !0 -
A Henry or other hoover will probably remove the fag ash, crisps etc but it will not shift the beer and wine stains, nor any other liquids or bodily fluids your nice friends may have donated.
You need to buy or hire a decent carpet cleaner or get a professional firm in to do the job. Water and detergent will now be required as the stains will have dried and set in.
There are a few recent threads on carpet cleaning on this forum. Search and read.
For future reference, though not easy to do at the height of a party, the quicker you deal with a wet stain on a carpet the more success you will have. I spilled a load of red wine on a beige carpet once but, because I acted immediately, I got it all out. I mopped it up with towels from the washing basket, then poured cold water on, let that dilute the red wine, soaked it up and repeated a few times. Don’t use salt, white wine or anything else. Cold water works just fine.0 -
right, have hired in the pro's. thanks for all the advice, next time I'll try keep on top of the situation instead of having too many beers
Cheers
