Endowment into savings for kids

I recently cashed in an endowment policy which was taken out for my son (aim to cover school, university etc.) and have £17,000 which he will need access to in a couple of years time. What is the best way to save this? Are ISA's a good idea? Are there likely to be any complications with this? He currently has £10000 (inherited from grandparents) in a children's savings account with Woolwich.
