I have an application form from a local company which asks my date Of Birth.

Isn't this illegal now and do I have to fill it in?

Do you not know your date of birth?

Depends how much you want the job really as to whether you fill the form in properly or not.

I have found that HR and the recruitment process appears to be far removed from the actual work that's on offer so personally I wouldn't judge the job by the application form.

If you do not fill it in looks like you have something to hide. I understand where you are coming from but it unlikely that they will invite you to a interview if they do not know your date of birth.

I only give my date of birth when I am offered the job but I do fill it out on application forms. I mainly send CVs for jobs so I rarely have to give out my date of birth when making job applications.

Like others have said, you might as well fill it in as requested as they can work out your age from education dates easily enough if it is that important to them. Not filling it in looks like you haven't read the form properly, rushed it and cut corners - none of which is going to make you look like a good candidate!
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.
  • Personally I would fill it in - I know at one interview they told me they were grateful that I'ld put my D.O.B on my CV as otherwise they have to calculate from when people took their degree. Generally they do try and work it out anyway.

Some jobs still require you to be over a certain age like anything to do with alcohol sales etc would be 18, depending on the job your less likely to get offered an interview if basic details aren't completed when other applicants will be giving them, it's also not that big of a deal anyway as if your offered the job you will give them the details anyway.

I would fill it in. If it is not illegal to ask for it then complete the whole form. I imagine most employers - even "local" ones - will not break the law by inviting applicants only in a certain age range to interview.

that bold bit worries me slightly - what the blank does it matter when someone took their degree, or what age they are?

If they do, let's hope they can give sound reasons for why those they've chosen to interview are the best, other than their age.
Signature removed for peace of mind

you only have to be 18 to serve alcohol in a bar/pub but if it's in a restaurant you can wait tables and serve alcohol if you are 16

some companies do break the law however as I have seen adverts for 20-14 year olds to work in an accounts team and when reported to the site in question the company was made to take the age range off but you knew right away if you were obviously over the age of 24 you would not even get an interview
