retrieve data from laptop?

Options
Help please.

My mum's laptop will not turn on. She's had an engineer out who fiddled with msn messenger and gave up. It worked temporarily and then dies again.

Mum thinks that the ports are loose

Anyway, it's her 70th birthday today  so I said I'd pay towards a new one - hers is 5 years old and getting more and more temperamental.

The trouble is she needs to transfer a load of games etc from hers. She's paid for and downloaded loads. Also photos etc.

Is there a way of getting that info from a dead laptop?

The easiest way is probably to take the hard disk out and put it in a desktop PC to backup the files. As long as your motherboard supports IDE drives, you can use an adapter like the one in the link below to plug in a laptop drive.

(Laptop drives are 2.5", desktop drives are 3.5")

  • Brilliant!

She relies on her PC because she's not well.
I'll start looking for a new one now :)

Maplins also have them..in you need one quickly ..which ever you get make sure it has the power supply lead on it.

Edit : make sure you set the jumper to "slave"

u can get an external unit that u plug the laptop hard drive into, it then connects to pc using usb lead cost about £8

means u don't have to open up pc,
