  • DD went to Birmingham last Sept.
    She lives in halls and the basic rent per week is £58. I give her £50 a week and for all her living expenses she manages on that plus some salary from her part time work when she comes home.
    She spends about £15 per week on food.
    £12 per month on internet access.
    £80 per term on train fare home.
    She managed an 8 day trip to Prague plus loads of christmas shopping with the rest.
    She`s only bought one book and isn`t required to buy more.
    We bought her a laptop and that and a skype phone have been a great investment.
    A good tip is to send them with lots of staple foods, pasta, tins ( tuna and beans!) cereal, bake off rolls - all sorts of things they can store under the bed and keep them going for the term.
    I cook soup she can freeze and always send her back with a cooked ham, she eats so much and freezes the rest. Plus don`t forget a massive supply of loo roll.
    All in all it hasn`t been as bad as I thought!
  • This might give you a rough idea of how much uni costs me, but it does vary between people -
    (this is all worked out per month)

    rent = £262.50
    bills(inc. internet, electric gas, phone, tv, split between 6 people) = £20
    food = £100
    other shopping (laundry stuff etc.) = £10 (-ish)
    nights out = £160
    clothes = £30
    mobile = £20
    gym = £28
    travel = 0

    total per month - £630.50 (omg didn't realise I spent that much!)
    I earn between £100 and £150 a week, and my student loan gives me about £175 a month

    soooo....
    income = £575 - £775
    outgoings = £630.50

    Please bear in mind that I am not at all good with money! I also spend alot on certain things, such as the gym membership, which being a student i could get alot cheaper but the uni gym isnt very nice so I pay more and go to a nice one. I also made a mistake by liveing in a house which is far too expensive. next year my rent will be around £190 per month. Also, nights out can be made alot cheaper too, that was averaging out 2 per week, spending £20 each time, but i think normally i spend less than this / go out less....

    oh my god i'd love it if my rent was £260!!! I have to pay £400 a month!!
    :heart2:

    I have DS and DD at uni. Due to the extra loan my DS gets in London he has money left over after paying rent and this covers food, where as DD needs £400 a term to cover the shortfall to put them in the same position.
    Love living in a village in the country side
