home phone windows scam

I know this nonsense has been going around for a while but it seems to have started up again.A lot of people, myself included in the south wales area have been getting scam calls about their windows installation, telling the home owner that these a serious problem etc.
Its a scam.they are trying to get access to your machine.As a rule i play dumb then i inform them that i'm a IT guy involved in network security.This usually confuses them.Then i give 'em a bit of abuse and hang up.

I know this has been around for a while, but just a reminder folks.

Pretty sure it's the computer variety.

Sadly it's a scam quite a lot of people still fall for

Yes, people in general are stupid and no matter how many warnings they have they still like to give their details/money away.

Some of it is down to pure stupidity of the person who is scammed, but scammers are often extremely good at targeting victims and preying on the most vulnerable.

Yes but how many sites/forums etc. are out there warning of these scams. They are mentioned on TV and radio constantly. Surely it has to get to a point where everyone is wise to it?

Or are some people just that oblivious to what is going on around them? i just cannot believe this. The general public are stupid but surely not this bad??

I've seen people fall for much dafter scams than this one - and part with a lot more money.

Another of my favourites is one I stole from a uni prof: 'There's nothing common about sense'

He used to say it whenever someone would say an answer wasn't difficult because it was 'common sense'.

I've had this call a few times now.
The first time the obviously foreign man (who said his name was Bill) told me my computer was running slow and sending faults to microsoft, he said press ctrl and run so I told him to hang on a sec and got my son down from his room. Son said just doing that was fine but they were probably after remote access so I said "sorry my son is a programmer and has just told me you are trying to access my computer remotely" He waffled on a bit about that not being possible then said if I had any more problems to ring back but didn't give me a number.
