Just made our first overpayment :D

The first actual payment won't come out till January but I added up what we had saved and DH's expenses and divided the money between the mortgage and savings accounts :D So thats £160 off :money:

Will need to look next month and see what the situation is in terms of interest etc as its such a new mortgage nothing has been applied that I can see yet.

    :D
  • Just out of interest, which bank is your mortgage with?
    Good luck on your journey!

I have just joined up the MFW 2012 thread. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3637943
If I overpay by the rate of £200 a month the mortgage will be off in 6 years (If I got the calculation right and assuming the base rate stays the same!)

Had a bit of a spending time on the house - those first month niggles! Fortunately I still had some in my moving and furnishing kitty to cover it... a new shower head and hose.. a blind for the bathroom.. cushions and curtains for the living room... stuff to lag the outside tap with.. an office chair for work.. and the biggest expense. My iron was a casualty of the move. The water chamber got cracked. No good as I need a steam iron for hub's shirts. So, I popped along to Currys and got a bargain steam generating Bosch Iron. Store price £169.99, click and reserve price £99! I got cracking on my phone and reserved it and save 70 quid

I was given a bit of folding stuff from my Mum and that has gone into the bank - as has the money DH's brother gave us... the next payment is already underway :D

Well I sit here typing this absolutely exhausted. Today has been an incredibly busy day.

My In Laws visited.. the peeps who gave us £20k towards our deposit back in August.

They brought xmas presents for the girls and got to see the new house for the first time. They live a 3 hour drive away and my MIL is not in the greatest of health so visits are few and far between.

And.... MIL gave us (unbeknownst to FIL) some folding stuff... so January's overpayment is in the bag already :D bless her.

In other news the car has cost us £500 on tyres today and balancing and so on... and DH got a call from his bank. With DH working away I keep a check on the accounts and what with the move etc I took my eye off the ball and for going £10 overdrawn and 3 x dd's bouncing they are charging us nearly 60 quid  I won't let that happen again  No amount of asking etc would make them waive anything either even though for the last 8 or so years that account has been in the black and no CC payments associated with that account have been missed

    Live and learn.

Our first mortgage payment went out today :D

(wonder if I will still be :D further down at payments leaving the bank??)

Anyway, a payment of £496.81 was paid into the account :D A little more this month as the mortgage began mid month so the few days remaining were built onto the first payment.

Then £136.77 went out as interest on the remainder  Thats almost the overpayment I already made  The realisation of these figures is mindblowing. So.. we had a 49,500 mortgage and now we are sub 49k. Just. £48,979 remains.

Working on the next overpayment. At least now I know that the overpayment is covering the interest charge! I am aiming to overpay £250 per month so some will go off the principal too.

Off to read the boards and see how to make some money :rotfl:

January overpayment just gone through, £200 over. Would have been more but we spent on the house. Lightbulbs, storage, curtains for the kids room, lampshades, still finding little niggles that need mending. Got a glazier coming this week to look at my UPVC as some of the windows have damaged black sealant around the units. I pray that it can be replaced and the windows won't need renewing in their entirety as that will put paid to my MFW plans. Have put the brakes on spending at the moment as our current account is below the comfort threshold for me.

Have some ebaying to do so thats my plan this week, and some old phones to go in for recycling.

Working on setting up number 2 business although its a bit tough going what with being solo all week looking after 3 lively girls. By the time my day ends I am t i r e d! I will get there though... I hope! :D
  • Well done, you are doing great x

So I have had a bit of a setback. I have a big list of jobs that need doing immiently.

Light in the conservatory - Dd2 pulled out the cord and fused it soemhow  Anyway it don't work and my friend the spark says its knackered.

In finding this we discover the main fuse box is the old style and could do with replacing too.

Guttering - a bit of a crack on the front that needs fixing and both corners need attention as there is damp coming down and I am hoping its the gutter alignment and not the roof or soffits. Its looking likely to be the gutter as the neighbour tells me moss is pretty prevalent here and one corner the gutter has a chunk missing and the other looks out of alignment so that needs sorting.
Hopefully that will sort the corners damp, if not then I need to get someone in to look at it and investigate it.

The bathroom.. The light fitting was never intended for a bathroom so that needs replacing as its blowing halogen spots at £2 a pop. Since we moved in ts cost me a tenner in replacements and its only just 2 months.

The bath is facing the wrong way too. There is an over bath shower but to shower you are balancing on the slope of the bath so we are going to look into moving the bath. Can't move the shower cos of the position of the window. Then we need an extractor putting in.

Airbricks/ventilation. Last week the glazier came to look at my glazing. The units are all fine thank goodness, the rubber seals need stretching and refitting. Basically the original fitter did a sloppy job  but in order to cure the condensation we need more vents.

So thats it, my jobs for at least the first 6 months of this year. Some safety, some more important than others, but all take priority over the overpayments at the moment. I am ebaying my craft stash as I have far,, far too much and doing a fair bit so that money will go into the pot for this lot.

My living room carpet that I wanted will have to wait for t he time being, I want this work doing first. My conservatory light mist be done first as I have clients coming in the evening and I can't weigh/monitor people in the dark!!

    Til next time.....
