Martin's emails go out to less than a million people - less than 5% of the spammable population... Our "great and good" spent over 700 hours debating fox hunting, and exactly how much time on anti-spam legislation..?

There may be several born every minute, but this stuff has been going on for years, and still isn't high profile. And to repeat my earlier post, BILLIONS are still going to the scammers, mainly from people who aren't "clever bu**ers" like us - easy to laugh isn't it?
  • Man at door offered gold and nice blond for £500. Still not got gold or blond.

Note, in the desert, the going rate for a blond is two camels!

Don't get me wrong - I do feel sorry for the person it happened to - if only for the obvious loneliness which drove a man to the point where all reason flies out of the window but wasn't it a wise woman (or man) who said that God gave Man a brain and a p***s but not enough blood to run both of them at the same time!!!!

Sorry couldn't resist that - I'll understand if it gets moderated.

    Edited for typo.

Scams are confidence tricks. Ofcourse when you hear the story you think "What an idiot" but why do so many of us fall for it. These guys are making millions from fools.
The scam process was a long one involving alot of emails and photo exchanges. They took him into their confidence and then screwed him.
I dont know if you watched a TV program called "The real Hustlers". They scam unsuspecting victims very successfully. Thanks to this website i consider myself quited savvy but i would fall for alot of scams they show.
  • Please tell your friend to vist http://www.scamvictimsunited.com/ where he will find similar stories and support. I hope he will feel better knowing that he is not the only one to be taken in by such fraudsters.

Advance fee fraudsters are often highly skilled at manipulation. A scam victim who is initially suckered in will get passed from the original scammer to their boss, who may be very smart with excellent English skills. They will try every nasty trick in the book to persuade victims to send money. IF you are already financially or emotionally involved it is easy to be persuaded or scared into wiring cash again and again.

I hope your friend feels better eventually, and I am glad he only lost money. Please PM me if you or your friend would be interested in more resources and advice.

In my opinion I don't think a lot of people do get taken in by these scams. I think a minority do because their longing for whatever it is blinds them to what is glaringly obvious to everyone else.

My Dad (who possibly had the greatest influence on my spending habits) brought me up to look for the catch in things. Not to be ridiculously over-the-top suspicious but to assume that there was a catch in anything that looked too good to be true and to search for that catch.

Look at it from a reasonable person's point of view. Why didn't 'your friend' go over and meet her? - he obviously has enough money to do that. He based decisions, which apparently cost him a few thousands, on a photograph! Does that make sense? No.

Assuming that she had actually existed and had come over to Britain. Your friend has 2 small children - why was he willing to let a total stranger move into his house? With his small children? Does that make sense? No.

If you work on the basis that you never get anything for nothing and that if something sounds too good to be true then it probably is then you won't get scammed. I don't want to sound smug but I can honestly say that I've never been scammed or conned by anyone and I'm 99.9999% sure I never will be.
Don't grow up. Its a trap!

    Peace, love and labradors!

He should have thought about it. I would have hoped he would have atleast spoken to her on internet webcam, and or telephone.

Then he should have been the one to go and visit her (he gets a holiday).
