advise needed..Returning a pair of trainers

Hi all, I brought my son a pair of addidas trainers a few days ago from a JD :mad:sports shop, they came with different coloured laces and addidas stripes for either side of the trainers. he has worn them for one day and wanted to change the stripe colour. We took out the laces to change the colour stripes, as we tried to pull it out the stripes snapped with 1 stuck in the shoe. on investigation the problem was with the stripe nearest the front of the trainer, the stitching covers nearly all the slot which makes it impossible to get out, not quite sure how they managed to get it in. My mum took them back to the shop with receipt and pointed out the stitching to the staff member, they said there is no fault with the trainer and to get a pair of tweezers to get the stripe out.which we did try... not happy with this, my mom went to see another member of staff who then joined by the 1st member of staff and said the same thing and they could send them to head office for investigation. but no refund or replacement trainers would be issued. leaving my son with no trainers for his hols and no refund to get another pair. I intend to visit the store myself, but wanted to be prepared and ultimately get an exchange or refund. any advise gratefully received.:(

You don't have a legal entitlement to replacement or refund unless they are faulty. This is probably just how they are designed and therefore not a fault. You did also have the opportunity to inspect them before purchasing them.

Also, it doesn't help the fact you have worn them.

Whats their instore policy for exchanges?

If its simply a case of the lace being a tight squeeze in the hole, are you sure you can't just try pull it through?

Rubbish, of course they are faulty. You bought them because the stripes are exchangable. They turn out not to be exchangable because of faulty stitching. Your goods are also not "as described". Definitely exchange or refund.

I agree the stripes should not snap under normal use if this i the intended feature of the trainers. The problem you have is that they are allowed to have them inspected for a fault, they are allowed reasonable time to do this, but this does not help you in the meantime. You may have to buy another pair of trainers and fight for the refund if you need them for the hols.
pretty bad CS from JD sports but then again they don't have the best rep when it comes to returns.

You could try and argue the the case again but this time speak to the manager, at least he can make a decision unlike the sales staff.

she doesnt have to give them time to inspect them, they are faulty goods only bought a few days ago and can be rejected for an exchange or refund.

While the OP does have the right to reject them, the retailer has the right to inspect them to ensure the fault is not due to misuse.

OP, why not take the trainers in and ask them to demonstrate how to change. If they cant do it, they must be faulty.
