Compensation for cancelled flight?

Hi all,
I recently travelled to America with my partner. He came out 2 weeks after me so he travelled alone. On the way out his flight was cancelled and he was put on a plane 24 hours later. The airline did provide him with a hotel in Manchester for the night but what im wondering is; is he entitled to more compensation.
He lost out on a nights pre-paid hotel stay and a days paid car rental. Not to mention losing a whole day of his 2 week holiday.
We wrote to US Airways and they offered him $150 off his next flight with US Airways. Is this a substantial offer or should we be asking for more?
To be honest we dont plan to travel back to the USA for a while so the money off is a bit useless to us!
We plan to reply saying this isnt acceptable considering the money he lost but I'm not sure what we should be expecting?
Has anyone been in a similar situation and been given something as compensation?
Thanks

You bowl like your mother. Unless of course she bowls well, in which case you bowl nothing like her
