what problems have you seen buying online? we sell hundreds of metres a month with very very few issues, as do a lot of other retailers. I've seen plenty of horror stories about tiles bought in shops but that doesn't mean it will happen to you. Just make sure you order sample(s) and are happy with your choice and make sure you buy from somewhere that knows what they are on about - ask a few leading questions first to test out the customer service.

    10% wastage advice is good.

No customer should have to be sorting through anything to find the 'best', any store that mixes multiple shades\batches have a big problem with their stock control - its the shops problem not yours.

We generally find the quality at the big sheds to be quite low - usually cheap imports (backed up by your suggestions of having to sort through) and Topps are generally very overpriced

As a rider to tpt's advice, if you are doing a bathroom in large sized tiles, you should allow upto an extra 20% when ordering tiles. this is because you cannot always use the off cuts elsewhere. The same rule applies if the tiles have a verticle or horizontal pattern.

Yep that all sounds fair comment and they do sometimes do silly deals.

Sample - I for one am always concerned if we get an order without first sending a sample, although sometimes customers see a tile in a shop then find it online.

returns wise - the distance selling regs give you a lot of safeguards, as does paying by credit card. if the tiles are wrong or faulty the retailer must quickly resolve it if they want to keep the sale as you can reasonably refuse and send back at their cost. Personally i always try to resolve an issue at least as quickly as we dealt with the initial sale - i.e. if they paid for next day originally then replacements should also be sent next day at our cost.
Furthermore if your simply not happy you are within your rights to return the goods - but you may have to pay for the cost of the return and original shipping costs if you have just changed your mind. as the previous poster says checkout the returns policy.

go and have a look locally to get ideas then spend half an hour on google
