30K KwH?

Hi,

I have received a letter from EON this morning to inform me my gas and electricity direct debit needs to be raised to £434 per month.

Now, I do have arrears of approx £1000 which I am not disputing (new build house didn't get old supply transferred correctly etc)

This has prompted me into looking at my bills online. My gas usage for 9 months - October 2010 (actual reading) - July 2011 (actual reading) a few estimates in between has worked at

29,953 KwH - does this sound anyway normal for 9 months of gas usage?

Background info - new build house, 4 bed, 3 kids, combi boiler, gch.

My electricity bill is a much more sedate 22 Kwh hours @ £279 for Jan-July.

I have briefly looked into the imperial/metric debate. I have a metric meter and according to the bill , am not being billed imperial.

My meter readings: Oct '10 - 5313 July '11 - 7591 = 29,953 KwH @ £970

That's for 9 months. Looking around I see almost 30 thousand KwH seems double other peoples consumptions. I'm sure we don't use double gas that most other people

Does this seem correct?

Many Thanks :o

I can only say the official "average" (whatever that means) is 16,500. On the face of it I would expect a 4 bed new build to be about there. However I can't account for how warm you like to be every hour of the day.

    Welcome to the forum.

A new build house will have a metric gas meter(Imperial haven't been fitted for years)Your meter readings(5313 to 7591) indicate that you have used 2,278 metric gas units which gives a consumption closer to 25,500kWh rather than 30,000kWh

For a new build house with good insulation and a new efficient boiler that is very high consumption. That said it was a very cold winter and new build houses do take a long time for the plaster etc to dry out.
My electricity bill is a much more sedate 22 Kwh hours @ £279 for Jan-July.

The above makes no sense. do you mean 2,200kWh costing £279?

    Your meter readings(5313 to 7591)

For the benefit of the OP and others confused or worried by imperial/metric, domestic metric meters have 5 digits (before the point), imperial meters 4 digits.

It's good practice to quote a metric reading using 5 digits, with a leading '0' if necessary.

A lot of this comes down to your own personal habits. The age of the property and who's there only have so much effect. Equaly important are things like:

How often do you have the heating on?
What temperature do you set it to?
How many rooms do you have radiators turned on in?

I didn't want to go there because there are still loads of non-digital meters with dials:
For example, the reading for the digital meter shown below should be recorded as 6653.

    Dial meter
If you have a dial meter, please remember the following points when you take a reading:
    • Adjacent dials rotate in opposite directions
    • Ignore dials marked ‘100 per rev’ and the large dial
    • Ignore red dials
    • Read the other dials from left to right; write down the number that the hand has passed
    • If the pointer falls between two figures, write down the lower figure. If the pointer falls between 9 and 0, write down 9
For example, the reading for the dial meter shown above should be recorded as 6653

I did say "domestic metric meter" and you linked to a "domestic imperial meter" (with dials).

Domestic meters come in digital as well as analogue, and in mechanical as well as electronic.

Please could you expand on this for me. Does this men that year 1 in a new build the prices could be higher due to a `settling in` period?

    Hi Sally_Cinnamon,

Already some good info posted, so thanks.

From what you have posted we can see that E.ON have included the balance in your monthly payments to clear this balance, so that's why they are higher.

It appears that your meter readings are accurate.

So it would be best as others have said to look at your usage, how long did you have the heating on for, what gas appliances do you use.

There is a consumption department at E.ON and I think it would be good for you to have a word with them.

They can go through your account/usage etc and see where/if this can be changed.

Also have a look at your tariff, are you on the best one for you.

If you need any more info, just shout up.

    Helena :)
