Hi there - first time post on the Techie board, although I have been lurking a lot recently researching what laptop to buy ... anyway, laptop is now bought and I am trying to work out how to transfer my files and photos from one to the other.
Now I have checked through the forum for advice, but am not really a techie person so a lot of it just goes straight over my head! Anyway, both the laptop and the pc are connected to the internet via a wired router, the laptop via usb and the pc via ethernet. The laptop is XP with a CDRW drive and the pc is 98 without a CD burner. Although I do have a usb stick, I have never been able to get it to work (driver probs) with the pc so this is not an option to use to transfer.
Some of the posts I have read have suggested using FTP??? to transfer via the router, but i can't for the life of me work out how to do this! Is it possible, and if yes, how do I do it and do I need to buy anything extra? I'd prefer not to have to shell out on anything else if poss, as the laptop was expensive enough!
I've also googled and got details of usb network bridge cables - if the FTP idea is a no go - is this the best route forward? If yes, is it just as simple as plugging and playing and where is the cheapest place to buy one?
Many thanks in advance if anyone is able to help!

Which router is it? Does it have 4 ethernet ports or one?
Are you able to use an ethernet cable for the laptop instead of usb?

Hi there albertross, will get busy reading your link - thanks for this. The router is a BT Voyager 205 and I think it only has one ethernet and one usb port, so I don't think i could do both with ethernet. The pc won't run with adsl, for some reason I couldn't load the drivers.0

Run the Network Setup Wizard on both machines, as shown at http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networksetupwiz.htm . You want the residential gateway option and the share files and printers option. Then start Windows Explorer and type \\otherComputerName in the address bar.
If you can't get Windows networking to work, upload the files you want to transfer to a file storage site and then download them to the other computer.0 -
Thanks for the advice Chippy - will try the 1st suggestion tomorrow. Just another quick question, when you say file storage site - never come across this before, would i just find one by googling?0

Do you have a friend with an Ipod?
I believe Ipod driver for win 98 are widely available and Ipods tends to have huge memories. Just ask a friend to 'enable disk use' and let you borrow it!They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!0 -
