It's really weird. I've seen trees that have grown bent over, due to the wind over time, but these are bending in opposite directions so it can't be wind damage.

I think they are Scotch Pines, they are a feature of the area, originally planted as windbreak hedges. Google 'The Brecks' to see them in their full glory!!

That's actually not a bad idea. I've seen pictures where the radiators are really close to the toilet and there's a good chance somebody's going to get their legs or bare behind singed.
