Looks like a doormat to me. There's no step, it's just a trick of the light (shadow from the bin, possibly, or maybe the floor covering stops a bit short.)

They've changed just about everything. Next door have junked their thatched roof too. Oddly the description is nearest station 43 miles away when Kettering is about 4 miles away.

I recognised several items in that cottage as things we have here but then I know my house is weird. Visitors take photos.
