Car insurance DOB mystery, price varies only on my DOB?

Hi guys,

First post here, decided to join as forum is full of useful stuff.

My question relates to my car insurance hunt, I have recently turned 21 and am looking for insurance on my new car.

Basically when I search with all my details correctly, I get the cheapest quote of £1900, from the Admiral group, ie Elephant, Bell so pretty pricey.

However, this is where it gets wierd, if I search with my date of birth as the day before, or the day after my date of birth, the price drops to £1900!

What on earth is going on here?
Any help please, as I am close to doing a Rocky style training montage and taking on Admiral myself!

Cheers

Your post doesn't show the drop???

Anyway, what is the point of getting quotes with a false DOB?

Sorry mate, I meant to say it dtops to £1000, so £900 of a difference.

The reason I checked it was because I thought maybe the £1000 price was for people 1 day older, which I could find sense in.

However what confuses me is that by putting a date of birth that would make me 1 day younger, returns a price £900 cheaper.

Why am I being quoted £900 more for 1 day of a difference?

    cheers

Seems strange, get them to check the quote. Though they may ask why you are putting in false DOBs!!!

True, I hadn't even thought of that.

    Thanks for replying!

If they ask why your putting it fake DoB's, tell them the truth, that you were just curious about what effect changing certain parameters has on insurance. I alter details all the time just out of interest. There's no problem.

Being one day older shouldn't affect insurance hardly at all.

Are you doing this directly on their site or via an aggregator (eg confused.com)?

Do you have any claims, convictions, previous insurance problems or a (generally) poor credit rating?

Yes I do have claims, and a minor conviction, I don't have either of the other 2.

I have called Admiral, and I am expecting a call any time soon from the pricing department to see if they can match the price down.

    Fingers crossed!

They may be doing database checks before calculating the price - when you use your real details you get matched. When you use fake details they don't.

It could well be a check by the insurer on price sensitivity.

Eg for a while charge people of age X born on even days £A and charge people of age X born on odd days £A*B. Then you can analyse quotes converted between the 2 groups etc.

Try again tomorrow/move your renewal date back one day... it looks like some sort of coding error to me, but if you put your correct DOB and it is one day later, you may see the better price?
