Taking up carpet which goes under fitted unit

Am redecorating a bedroom which has built in bookcases along the full length of one wall.
In pulling the carpet away from the edges to paint the skirting, I've realised that the bookcases were fitted on top of the carpet. (They were put in by a previous owner).
We are keeping the bookcases but will be changing the carpet. What's the best way to take it up? It's standard fit - just attached along the edges to gripper rod.
Do we just cut it as neatly as possible along the bottom edge of the book case, and then fit gripper rod for the new carpet along this edge? Worried the manky old green carpet will show under the bottom of the bookcase...

No reason why it should show if the new carpet is fitted properly. In any case, if you are not prepared to remove the wardrobe, you have no choice in the matter. Other than to cut it neatly and lay the new carpet up against the cut edge.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Cut carpet along front of bookcase, install a new plinth on top of the old one, covering the carpet gap, and down to floor. Carpet up to new plinth0
