Parkside, my daughter is on medication from the doctor. I am just trying to make changes to her diet that means she wont need to be on it long term.

    Ted,
It is entirely my daugher's choice to be vegetarian. I would rather she at least ate fish. She has dyslexia and I would like her to have fish oil regularly. Ted gave me some advice at the start of the year, which I followed until my daughter refused because of her vegetarianism.

I hadn't thought of linseed for humans. I used to feed it to goats!
Flaxseeds needs grinding into meal or it passes straight through. I bet your goats had lovely shiny coats and were dead crafty.

You are right, my goats had lovely coats. We used to take them to agricultural shows and they won well.

Where do I buy this from Ted? I make lots of things that I could grind this into.

If you, as a family, followed the Meditteranean way of Healthy eating, with fish, eggs, poultry only being eaten once a week and meat an only once a month treat, for the most part you would be able to see that the veggie was eating a good range of healthy nutritious food as 90% of their diet would be the same as yours and their would be no excuse to opt out.
Those concerned about obtaining vegetarian sources of DHA (as I'm not convinced of the route via linseed (ala)) may be interested in Healthspan Cerebrum Capsules - (Omega 3) Vegetarian Algal DHA - Gelatin Free bit pricey but theres a P&O - OS code that may reduce it a bit.

wholefood shops that sell SUMA stuff. They will order you a 5kg bag of whole brown linseed £5.75ish. You put that in a strong plastic bucket with a good lid and it will keep for a couple of years, mice love linseed and will come from miles and chew through the bag it came in easily. Coffee grinder will whizz it into meal in seconds. Then keep a potful in the fridge as the meal does start to deteriorate.

Use in seed mix sprinkle, add to cereal/porridge, use as seasoning for veg, substitute with a little water for fat or eggs, add to stews, casseroles all sorts, a couple of tablespoons a day will improve your skin and as important as the conversion to EPA, some of which MAY be converted to DHA(but not much) the addition of linseed meal and ALA tends to point your metabolism towards EPA and away from omega 6's. more here

Chocolate has iron in it ... so a Terry's chocolate orange is good (vitamin C there!). Or Thorntons do Chcoloate covered apricots (I got some for Christmas, mmmmm!)

Although I make this suggestion with my tongue VERY firmly in my cheek, it's no substitute for all the other healthy things people have suggested. :rotfl:

We did buy some Thorntons dark chocolate yesterday :D
  • I have suffered from anaemia and have found a couple of sachets of 'Spatone' to be fantastic for increasing iron count. It is sold in boxes in Boots (often on special offer) and H & Barrat. I found that iron tablets do not agree with me at all, yet these sachets of iron rich water from Wales seem to absorb into my system better than any tablets and my Hb level has shot up.
    HTH.
