It sounds as though it's far more likely to be the fittings than anything to do with the actual bulb. Far best to get them checked first.

    All the best, Sue

Means you need a new energy saving lightbulb fitted, they don't last forever.

No it's not, change the bulb and if it stops you know exactly what the problem is. (You could even borrow one from another fitting). Don't look for complicated expensive problems until you have tried the easy ones first.

I have had the same problem in two different fittings. The bulb has been damaged by a loose connection in the plug, switch or bulb holder.

    ...

    what does flickering mean?
As far as I am aware, the flickering of a light bulb has no semantic content. With birds twittering, the semantics are obviously related to their activities and the need for survival. The alarm call of a disturbed blackbird is instantly recognisable and it serves both to alert other nearby blackbirds of a need for flight and to distract those other blackbirds from whatever food the blackbird was working on before it was disturbed.

For lightbulbs it is far from certain that they have desires or intentions which require communication, although if they did require to communicate, flickering would be the obvious way to do it. It is however most likely that the needs and asprations of light bulbs are so far removed from our own that the semantic content of the flickering can be safely ignored. But if it annoys you, just change the bulb. The new bulb will most likely convey its pleasure to you at being selected by giving a steady light.
