Hi guys!!
Just wanted a little advice. I currently have the following machine:
HP Vectra
Intel Pentium III processor
DVD-ROM/CD-ROM Drive
I now would like a laptop (just for being able to use it away from the desk and to save space when on the desk.
Is there any point in trying to sell my old machine? If so, how much for, and whats the best laptop deal out there (not too expensive and has to have the capibility to have broadband on). I am currently with virgin on broadband if that’s of any help.
I wont use the laptop for anything really like games, however I will need it to be able to handle the Adobe CS2 package which is reasonable demanding.
Help!!

I've just started entering the competitions (July 07). When I win I'll update this signature. Look on the bright side, I shouldn't have to update it very often.

Give me £10 to take the pent 3 of your hands.
Laptop for Adobe Photoshop I would be looking at a high spec machine, at least 1 gig of r.a.m. AMD processor at least a 4800+0 -
I might just give my old one to the Citizens advice bureau then i think!!I've just started entering the competitions (July 07). When I win I'll update this signature. Look on the bright side, I shouldn't have to update it very often.0

agree with leesmithg - you're going to need a fairly powerful laptop to run CS2 well and as for your old comp if you were looking to sell on ebay, postage would probably be more than what you got for the computer.0

So maybe it will be better to get another desktop (tower) with a flat screen?
Def gona need to run photoshop cs2 at least.
The AMD 4800 you talk of. How powerful is that in Ghz?

Runs at 2.4Ghz, but you have to take into account it's Dual Core.Dave. :wave:0 -
How big is the disk drive in the PC?
If it is 80gb or more, try selling it on ebay. People are buying them for use in Sky+ boxes and as external drives for laptops etc. Even smaller drives sell for a few pounds.
Or buy yourself an external caddy and use it yourself for backups.
The other components, DVD drive etc, might fetch a few pounds too.
edit: Donating to the CAB or another charity or a school is also a good idea.0 -
You don't quite need anything as powerful as that.
Photoshop will run on much less. It really depends to what extent you're using Photoshop. An Athlon64 3000+ with 1gb of RAM will run it without really slowing up too much. Obviously the higher the spec the better though.
What kind of budget do you have for a laptop? I'd consider trying to get one of the Intel Core 2 Duo laptops. The MacBook would be good (around £800) although only has a 13" screen. Makes it very portable though."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

ok it is dual core but just incase people get confused the speed rating of 4800 has nothing to do with 2 cores at 2400 = 4800.
Anyway for the price of that processor you'd be far better of with a core II duo. And yes unless you really need portability a desktop will always be better (£/capability). You could get a small shuttle type case if space is an issue.0 -
If you are giving the machine away, make sure that the hard drive is wiped completely clean - you don't want any of your old files getting out there. Partition Magic (for example) will do a clean removal of a partition, and then you should create a new one on top of it.
I got rid of my last old PC through FreeCycle - within minutes of listing it, I had at least 10 people asking if they could have it! They will come and collect it as well.
If the HD is of a decent size, you could always remove it and make an external hard drive - I bought a kit from eBuyer for about £25 and built an external hard drive with a spare hard disc I had at home. At least you wouldn't have to worry about your data falling into the wrong hands!

I'd agree - from everything I've read, the Core II Duo moves Intel back ahead of AMD in the chip manufacturing stakes.
Tesco had some the other day for £499, I think.0
