Back in January it was an estimate, but April-July was an actual reading.

Maybe it could have been building up from January when it was estimated, but it still doesn't explain how we have used 3 times more gas in April-July than we did last year, unless that is why also ~ does the useage get rolled over?

Was there a balance showing on either the January or April statements? If you had a bit of debt built up then that could explain the increase...

Post your actual kWh usage figures with dates, for the 2 periods you are talking about.

Does it make a difference if the reading has been estimated or not?

None of it makes sense to me I'm afraid. :o

We only moved here last March, that's why it was 0 last Feb.

The issue there is Februarys estimated read. Given you used 6700 kWh between the end of July and start of November, do you really think that using 1900 kWh during the much colder period covering November to February is accurate? My guess would be that you actually used ~10,000kWh then, which is only being caught up on now that you've given an actual reading. After all, last year you used 5000kWh between moving in in March and the reading on the 20th of April...

The same old story I'm afraid-you've gone 8 months without supplying an actual meter reading (from 8/11/10 to 19/7/11). You need to supply readings at least quarterly in order to get accurate billing, and always check your bills against actual readings.
Of course it make a difference is the bill is estimated, it means that you may be over or underpaying, and once an actual reading is taken, you payments may need to be adjusted to reflect actual consumption.
