Heat Recovery/Recycling

The layout of my house means that a lot of heat collects at the top of the stairs in a central hall area. In the summer this is from heat transmission through he partially insulated sloping areas of the ceiling (loft conversion) and in the winter it is from downstairs heat travelling up the stairwell, not practical to fit door/curtains.

I was considering fitting a bathroom extractor on the wall in the area where the heat seems to collect the most and then ducting it downstairs into a hall /living room area with 3 outside walls at the opposite end from the stairwell.

I reckon I could do it for around 60 pounds and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the matter both for or against and whether it would be economically a good thing to do.

Cheers

  • It says in there that he reckons the theory is sound its just the execution that's a bit ropey. I have a handy cupboard in the area that I want to vent that is directly above the area I want to use the extra heat in. this means minimal installation (about 2 metres of ducting a fan and a vent cover. Think I will give it a go anyway. I will post how I get on.

The only problem is that you will be putting stale air back into the house. I think commercial heat recovery systems add fresh air to the recovered air so that you are getting a change of air.

Currently with both front and back windows open in main bedroom adjacent to hall the temp can get up to 25 C so think the air should be fresh enough. But [point taken for winter use. The systems you are talking about cost hundreds this should cost pounds.
