My mum has been unwell for about 12 years and suffers from arthritis in her hands which is frustrating for her as she has no grip at times. She also has a chip in her spine and suffers from severe back pain and has problems getting up the stairs.

She applied for DLA with the help of the local housing associations welfare officer and had a consultation with a doctor a few weeks ago. The doctor didn't note down anything that my mum was telling him and he seemed to be not very sympathetic.

She was refused but is allowed to appeal.

My question to you is... Do you think she has much of a chance? I know of people personally who have it who have nothing wrong with them. I mean they have absolutely nothing wrong with them. I just think it's rather unfair.

Appeal. If you feel that she should be getting the DLA then defiantely appeal.

Get some help from your local Citizens Advice Bureau or Welfare Rights Service who should be able to help you fill in forms and attend appeal etc - their help is great as they have done it before.

Get as much information and supporting evidence from the medical profession that see your Mum. Also request a copy of the medical report and note any discrepancies and also try and write down as much of what happened and was said during the medical. It would also be worth keeping a diary of how the illness affect her and her ability to do things day to day.
