On the scrounge!
If anyone has an RJ45 to USB data cable (from an EON Energy Monitor) lying around in a cupboard gathering dust which they will never use or no longer need please PM me.
I know where I can buy one but I'll be !!!!!!ed if I'm paying £8.50 for a bit of wire with plastic ends.
Thanks

That is the most bizarre combination I have ever heard.
USB is a short distance technology, up to 5 meters, whereas Ethernet using RJ-45 is for long distance like 1000 meters.
Are you sure you are not looking for USB A to Mini B? Like a Sony PSP?0 -
I agree with you but it's definitely RJ45 to USB A (active) as detailed here:- currentcost.com/product-datacable.html (sorry can't post live links). The EON Energy Monitors are just rebadged Current Cost Envi units.
Obviously they initially designed the connection that way to make additional money out of the cable (which was originally an optional extra) due to the odd combination/lack of ready availability.0 -

Wow, it's like a snake with the head of a griffin, and a tail of a fish.
I should call it a chimera, but it actually exists.
If I were a Bene Gesserit, I would declare it an abomination and burn it straightaway.

I suppose you could cut up an old USB cable, and crimp on a RJ45 blank.

I would try to get a free energy monitor that actually comes WITH a lead.0 -
Hi, yourarvinalarrf is correct, its the 1st time I have seen a lead like this.
I was having trouble getting the energy monitor to connect to the computer, the blue light on the lead was not lit.
I managed to borrow one to check it out, the blue light was now lit but it still didnt connect.
I then tried it on an old computer and it worked ok.
The old computer is XP and it works ok, the new computer is Windows 7 and it doesnt although I suspect that the problem may be that it is the 64 bit version of Windows 7. !!!0 -
Had a look at that page of yours.
It's an ACTIVE cable!
"The cables can be used on either the Classic or the ENVI displays.
The cable includes the prolific (USB-Serial) chipset - the driver can be found HERE:
http://currentcost.com/software-downloads.html
The output from the display is an xml string, users should either feel technically comfortable in working with this or plan on using one of the available online applications."
They really want you to buy that cable.
At least they have a full complement of drivers.
even for the Mac.0 -
Messing about making a cable up is not really an option for me.The DIY way

Good idea but you need to be an EON customer paying by DD to get one free and I'm not an EON customer! British Gas also had the same rebadged Current Coost ENVI unit available free to customers (they called theirs a "Real Time Electricity Monitor" but it was supplied without the cable. The MSE way:

This blog I found may be of some help to you currentcost.posterous.com/data-cables-and-driver-installation (sorry still can't post live links). It should be just a matter of finding and installing the right driver for whichever cable you have.the new computer is Windows 7 and it doesnt although I suspect that the problem may be that it is the 64 bit version of Windows 7. !!!
Note to EON rep - if you read this thread your chance to really impress a non customer awaits you!
meanwhile the search continues...........0 -
I have been with E.On for aeons.
They kept sending useless rubbish like shower head aerator (water saving), to get the government quota off their back. And then the one thing I actually wanted, the lightbulbs, they never sent. The guy who answered the phone (EAGA, I think) said they only send them out to some people on the list. It seems so long as EAGA got their application numbers up, E.On pays them. EAGA gets the money for 100,000 items, but only sends out 20,000 items, and pockets the rest of the money. Who checks? These eco-warriors should become accountants and auditors.
So I never bothered applying for the Energy Monitor.
I know precisely how much I'm using, from the meter,
and from the quarterly statement!
Any way, if the E.On rep is listening, you can give the energy monitor that you were going to give me to this larfing person, but don't do it through EAGA, because he will never actually get it.0 -
Hi, I was with EON last year and switched back to them for gas this year, I have automatically received 2 x energy monitors ( one of which I gave to my mother ) , plus 2 carbon monoxide detectors (ditto ) and some tear drop night lights.
I consider the EON monitor far superior to the BG and SP ones I have previously been supplied with, although I think the latest BG offering is an improvement on the previous model.0
