help network 2 lap-top computers

Hello.

I was wondering if anyone can help. I have two lap-top computers. I want to format one of the computers, but I need to transfer about 5gb of data on to the other computer. I have a network cable but don't know wat to do.

.plug the network cable it two both laptops they have to have a network card in them.you will no if theres is one of those if there is a slot for the wire to go in. Make sure they are both on. go to my computer then my network places.Then click set up a home or small office network. Then follow the set up along you have to do this on both laptops.Make sure they both have the same work group name. Then after its finshed go to view workgroup computers and hopeful you should be able to see the other laptop. you can only copy stuff in the shared documents unless you make more stuff shared.make sure you firewall allows you.

If the lead is going from laptop to laptop you will probably need a special type called a crossover cable. A normal network lead won't work.

Alternatively plug both laptops into a router or switch and it should work fine, providing you follow the configuration advice from thomas01155 above.
