Business Name

Hi Guys

I just wanted to check on here first because you MSE people are very knowledgeable.

Can I use the city I live in "Cambridge" as part of my Business name.

Ie Cambridge Business Ltd (Clearly not the name im going to use) or do I need to get permission from Someone within the city. Like the Mayor.

Regards

  • Are you definitely going to operate as a limited company?

If so, the main question will be whether or not your name is already taken.

From what I remember, there are some words such as bank that you must not use. I think that charity and international if you are not are best avoided too.

There are hundreds of companies with Cambridge in their names so I guess that using a city name is ok if relevant.

Think your fine with town/counties etc. You have to get permission to use British in your business name though.

If you look at the Companies House website, you will find their regulations about names. Some of it applies both to limited companies and trading names for sole traders. There are "sensitive words". I had no idea there was so much to it.

In summary, you must not be offensive and you must not be misleading. You must not pretend that you are more important that you are, or suggest connections or qualifications that do not exist.

sO "The ****ING Royal British Bank" would not be allowed!

Interestingly, Sheffield is not always allowed, because of the stainless steel connection.
