hollydays wrote:Wasnt there something in the news about problems with a travellers site in Cambridge. Are there any problem areas to avoid?I have worked there and found the bus journey am and pm on congested roads very tiring to the park and ride.It is one of my favourite uk cities, very busy with tourists in summer.I loved it.I understand the property and the wages tend to be higher there.
That's Cottenham and it is quite a way out of the city. They are around and I know the cabbies have quite a few problems with them but other than that you don't really hear fro them (apart from when they are in Argos trying to buy a tv without a tv licencse).0 -
Thanks to everyone for their replies, I really hope it will be Cambridge
I'm not to bothered about traffic, I don't drive and either walk or take a bus everywhere I go, OH drives but if he can avoid it he will, he cycles or walks if possible.
Moneywise we will have to see what kind of salary he is offered and what sort of salary I will be able to get in London. We have built a lot of equity on our house and are debt-free (thank God!) apart from the mortgage, and we do have some savings, so we would be able to put down quite a large deposit on a house.
We are planning to go and visit at the end of the month or beginning of next month, OH dissertation is due on the 15/02 so it really depends on how well he is doing with it and if he can leave it for a week-end.
Most of you seem to really like Cambridge and it really makes me want to go there. I am pretty tired of living here, I miss cultural activities, museums, theatres, a nice town... Portsmouth has some nice areas (1 or 2) but apart from that there are some rundown places.
When we moved to England 6 years ago Portsmouth was the only place we could afford to live that was near OH's work in Chichester, we have a really nice large Edwardian house, and if I could I would take it with us to Cambridge. I suppose I will be swapping a large house for a nice town and museums
.
Ok I'm off to check all those websites you mentioned...
Thanks again to everyone!0 -
See the thread here about living Ely.
I work in Newmarket and Cambridge and it's not too bad for getting into Cambridge to work. The trains go to Cambridge regularly so commuting isn't too bad. Also only takes an hour to get to London. There are also park and ride schemes on the way in.
Been here 3 months and really really enjoying it. We couldn't have afforded to buy a house in the areas of Cambridge we like, so this was a good compromise. It's fairly convenient for travelling into Cambridge for shopping, eating out etc.The cells are my friends...<img>0
